What is CORSIA?

The Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) is the first global market-based measure applied to an entire economic sector. Developed by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and adopted by 193 member states, CORSIA requires airlines to offset CO₂ emissions growth from international flights above a defined baseline.

Unlike regional schemes (such as the EU ETS), CORSIA applies globally to international aviation routes between participating states — covering more than 90% of international aviation activity. It is expected to offset or reduce 2.5 to 4 billion tonnes of CO₂e through 2035.

Airlines must purchase and cancel ICAO-approved "emissions units" (carbon credits) from approved programmes to satisfy their offsetting obligations. CarbonClearingHouse holds ACR-certified CORSIA-eligible credits — approved by the ICAO Council for the 2024–2026 mandatory compliance period.

Pilot Phase2021 – 2023
Completed

Voluntary participation phase. Airlines from 88 states voluntarily offset growth in international CO₂ emissions above 2019 baseline levels. Established the operational framework and registry infrastructure.

Voluntary — 88 participating states
Phase 12024 – 2026
Active Now

First mandatory compliance period. Airlines must offset CO₂ growth beyond 85% of their 2019 emissions for all international routes between participating states. ICAO has issued the first-ever growth factor for 2024 offsetting obligations.

Mandatory — 85% of 2019 baseline threshold
Phase 22027 – 2035
Upcoming

Expanded mandatory phase with a sector-wide baseline replacing individual airline baselines. Expected to cover 90%+ of international aviation CO₂. Offsetting requirements will intensify significantly as air travel demand recovers and grows.

Sector-wide baseline — expanded scope

Four buyer segments with active compliance needs.

Commercial Airlines

International carriers with routes between CORSIA-participating states. Phase 1 (2024–2026) requires offsetting CO₂ growth beyond 85% of 2019 emissions. CCH provides ACR-certified credits with full compliance documentation.

Procurement Process

From obligation to compliance in five steps.

CCH manages the full procurement lifecycle — from obligation modeling to registry cancellation and audit documentation.

01

Determine Your Obligation

Calculate your airline's or operator's CORSIA offsetting obligation using ICAO's Carbon Emissions Calculator (CERT) or work with CCH to model your exposure based on route pairs, passenger load, and 2019 baseline comparisons.

02

Select Eligible Credit Type

Choose from ICAO-approved emissions unit programmes. CCH holds ACR-certified credits (ICAO-approved for 2024–2026) and can source across all approved programmes. We advise on vintage, methodology, and co-benefit alignment.

03

Submit Information Request

Contact CCH via our confidential information request process. We disclose full credit details — registry, vintage, methodology, project location, and verification documentation — exclusively to qualified buyers under NDA.

04

Execute ERPA & Settlement

Finalize the Emission Reduction Purchase Agreement (ERPA). CCH handles all registry transfer mechanics, serial number documentation, and cancellation certificates required for CORSIA compliance reporting.

05

Compliance Documentation

Receive a complete compliance package: cancellation certificates, registry records, chain-of-custody documentation, and audit-ready files formatted for submission to your state's Civil Aviation Authority.
